RUSSIAN SOCIAL SURVEY (RSS) ON ESS SPECIFICATION AND PROGRAM

ABOUT PROJECT

Russian social survey (RSS) is the academic project aimed to collect comparable time-series and cross-national data on attitudes, opinions, values and behavior. The survey is based on the same methodology as European Social Survey (ESS) which includes 30 countries of “Larger Europe” to conduct cross-national comparisons.

The data is collected once in two years from the national sample of the population of 15 years old and over by face-to-face interviews in respondent’s homes. The survey is designed and implemented on most advanced and rigorous methodological standards. It is supplemented by methodological experiments and testing new methods and approaches of collecting reliable social survey data which can be used for academic sociological analysis, defining social policies and strategies, and it also makes input in increasing general knowledge about the progress of the society.

RSS started in 2006 (3td round of ESS). Since then, nine rounds of the survey were implemented and released.

The next round of RSS is planned for year 2026.

Data

Data documentation and databases are allowed for free access and can be used for academic, educational or informational purposes without any restrictions or embargo. 


Survey materials and the description of the survey methodology are allocated at website www.russiansocialsurvey.ru, databases – at www.cessi.ru (DATA BASES). International materials and documentations for ESS in English are located in www.europeansocialsurvey.org (data on Russia for waves 3-6 and 8 only).

RSS is financed from multiples sources within Russia – it is supported by the Russian Foundation of Basic Research (RFBR), Highest School of Economics (HSE) and other funding institutions. 

Content

The project aims to study long-term changes in social attitudes, opinions and values, to chart and explain changes in national social, political and moral climate in comparison with other countries. The survey includes indicators of political values, political behavior, social structure, inequality, social mobility, household composition, labor values, wellbeing, quality of life, religious beliefs and practices, national identity, attitudes toward migration, social capital and general life values. The rigorous survey methodology and inclusion of multiple indicators developed by leading scholars in different social science fields make the project the major reference source and benchmark for other research.

PUBLICATIONS AND THE USE OF RESULTS

Analytical report prepared on the base on first rounds of the survey in Russia by leading Russian researchers and scholars in different research fields in sociology, political sciences and demography can be found here.
